Throughout history, humanity has struggled against major outbreaks caused by germs and bacteria. Four Thieves Vinegar became known through a remarkable story of theft that took place during the great outbreak that affected Europe from the 14th century until the 1700s.

During the outbreak in Marseille, France, in the 17th century, four thieves looted the homes of wealthy people who had lost their lives and took valuables from their bodies. Despite entering environments where germs and bacteria were highly concentrated, the four thieves remained unaffected. After they were eventually captured, they were told that their death sentences would not be carried out if they revealed the method they had used to protect themselves from germs and bacteria.

The four thieves confessed that they washed their hands and gargled with a special vinegar mixture they had prepared themselves. They were then required to reveal the formula of the mixture. This formula was recorded in the French Codexes of 1748 and 1884 and was used for many years in pharmacies as a traditional mixture that supported personal cleanliness and hygiene.

Historical sources state that this vinegar was preferred for cleaning environments where germs and bacteria were highly concentrated. It was also traditionally believed to be particularly effective against bacteria such as salmonella and streptococcus. Ottoman physicians were also known to clean houses from top to bottom with vinegar before entering places where germs and bacteria had spread. They would then burn various plants and aromatic substances before going inside.

During periods when germs and bacteria spread intensely in Istanbul, Chief Physician Mustafa Behçet Efendi recommended in his writings that Four Thieves Vinegar should be used together with the scent of ammonia or garlic when visiting crowded neighbourhoods with low and adjoining houses. He also mentioned adding a small amount of Four Thieves Vinegar to drinking water.

Today, this traditional vinegar, prepared under the same name, continues to be used for personal and environmental hygiene.

Four Thieves Vinegar contains apple cider vinegar together with aromatic herbs and spices such as wormwood, rosemary, mint, rue, sage, lavender, calamus root, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, nutmeg and black peppercorns. With its natural ingredients and distinctive aroma, it is a versatile mixture that complements daily cleaning and hygiene routines.

Used for centuries, Four Thieves Vinegar is one of the traditional products preferred for creating cleaner and more hygienic environments during periods when germs and bacteria are widespread. Made from natural ingredients, this special mixture can be used in different ways for personal care and environmental cleaning.

You may add one teaspoon of Four Thieves Vinegar to a glass of water for consumption or dilute it appropriately for use in cleaning your surroundings.
